The title breaks off after "Uncle," but it points to a figure who was a familiar stand-in for the nation: Uncle Sam, often shown in staged or costumed scenes for holiday greetings. The Library of Congress dates the print to the 191- decade, roughly the 1910s, when studio tableaux and illustrated Christmas cards were popular ways to deliver sentimental or patriotic messages. Because the record gives no photographer or sitter, the image is best read as part of that wider holiday custom, in which familiar national symbols were used to address a home audience.
