The record identifies this glass negative only by the name "Ilse Marwenga," a title the Bain News Service supplied on its negative or caption card and that has not been independently verified. The Bain News Service was a New York press agency whose photographers recorded portraits, events and everyday scenes from about 1900 into the 1920s, and its glass negatives were usually small enough to be printed and sent quickly to newspapers. Because the date, location and circumstances are not recorded, the name is the main clue to who or what the picture shows. Its place in the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress is the best guide to its origins.
