A woman holding a glowing orb, with wings made of fractal patterns and sailing ships drifting alongside her, sets this image apart from the traditional angels around it. Winged female figures have long stood in for angels and fairies in Western art, but fractal wings point to a much more recent source. Fractal geometry, popularized by mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot in the 1980s, describes shapes that repeat at smaller and smaller scales, and digital artists adopted those forms to create endlessly detailed surfaces. The piece shows how an older vocabulary of wings and light has been carried into modern fantasy art.
