A blue-winged fairy drifts alongside a wasp, an unusual pairing that sets the delicate figure beside a creature known for its sting. Fairy imagery like this flourished in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when illustrators drew on folklore and a fascination with insects to fill children's books, annuals and decorative prints. Because fairies were so often shown with gauzy, insect-like wings, placing a real insect beside one made a natural visual play. The board groups it with angels and fairies, a category where religious and folkloric imagery often overlapped.
