Here a fairy and an elf sit together among blue bellflowers, a pairing that places the figures in the meadow rather than in a formal scene. Bellflowers, sometimes called harebells, were long linked in British folklore with fairy haunts, and artists of the late 1800s and early 1900s drew on that tradition heavily, often setting small winged or elfin figures among wildflowers. Such pictures were popular in illustrated books, greeting cards and nursery annuals, where they offered a gentle, storybook view of the natural world. Notice how the flowers, rather than the figures, carry much of the color and detail.
