Little is recorded for this glass negative beyond its title, which the Bain News Service noted on the negative or caption card without verifying it. The name, Dr. M.J. Bonn, is the only clue to the sitter, so his identity and the occasion of the picture remain open questions for researchers. The image belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, built by a New York news photography service that supplied pictures of people and events to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its small format, five by seven inches or smaller, was typical of the glass plates the service used for quick newspaper work.
