The only name attached to this negative is Luigi Binaudi, and the Library of Congress notes that even this title comes from unverified data written on the negatives or their caption cards, so the sitter's identity remains uncertain. The plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency founded in 1899 that supplied news photographs to newspapers and magazines. Its small glass negatives record the fast pace of early twentieth-century city life, when pictures moved quickly from the camera to the printing press. Many of the service's portraits carry only sparse documentation today, which makes each caption card worth reading closely.
