Few magazine posters of the 1890s have the playful, decorative character of this one, which advertises *The Lark*, the San Francisco literary periodical that Gelett Burgess and Bruce Porter launched in 1895. Florence Lundborg made this color woodcut in a style that drew on Japanese prints and the Arts and Crafts design then popular in California. The magazine was known for its witty verse and bold cover art, and the poster shows how its editors used graphic design to set it apart from more conventional journals. The date and promotional details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
