Two elderly passengers, dressed in formal clothes as if headed to an evening engagement, have nodded off side by side on a New York subway car in this cover for the December 3, 1938, issue of *The New Yorker*. The scene turns an ordinary commute into a quiet moment of shared weariness, and the couple's dignified attire sets off their drowsy posture. Cover art like this was a hallmark of the magazine in the 1930s, when its illustrators used gentle wit and everyday city life to reflect the habits of its readers. The drawing combines watercolor, charcoal, and graphite, and it came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Perry Barlow in 1961.
