Willis Van Devanter is the subject of this bust-length portrait, a glass negative of the kind the Bain News Service produced for newspapers and magazines in the early 1900s. Van Devanter, who had practiced law and served on the Wyoming territorial court before moving to Washington, sat on the United States Supreme Court from 1911 until his retirement in 1937. The Bain agency's caption data, which the catalog flags as unverified, supplies the identification, and the missing date means the sitting itself can only be placed within his years on the bench. The tight framing typical of these studio and news portraits makes the face the main subject.
