A 1917 Berlin poster announcing an exhibition titled "Kriegerehrungen," or "honors for the fallen," with its subject set out in the catalog-style heading. Its subjects, helmets and tomb monuments, show how German wartime culture turned the dead soldier into a public symbol. Exhibitions like this encouraged memorial designs and commemorative objects while the war was still being fought and the casualty lists were growing. The halftone printing made the poster inexpensive to reproduce and easy to post across the city.
