A 1917 color lithograph advertises an exhibition in Vienna of trade schools for war-disabled men, the German title reading "Ausstellung der gewerblichen Kriegsinvaliden-Schulen." By that year Austria-Hungary had fought for nearly three years, and its government ran retraining programs that taught injured soldiers new trades so they could support themselves after returning home. Exhibitions like this one showcased the work of those students to the public and to potential employers, and posters of this size were pasted on city walls to draw crowds. The poster is a useful record of how wartime Vienna presented its disabled veterans as workers rather than only as casualties.
