Set into a wooden-framed chase, these metal letterpress type pieces and printing blocks are shown locked up and ready for the press, the stage just before ink meets paper. Hand composition like this was how nearly every book, newspaper and handbill was made for roughly five centuries, with a compositor setting each letter backward and upside down, one at a time. Worth noticing is the tight wedging of quoins and furniture around the type, which kept the whole form rigid enough to print without shifting.
