Tom Swift was the boy inventor of a long-running series of juvenile adventure novels, and this picture zooms in on the spines of the old hardcovers themselves, their lettering and cloth bindings the real subject rather than any scene from the stories. The series began in 1910 under the pen name Victor Appleton, a house-produced name attached to ghostwritten titles from the Stratemeyer Syndicate, which turned out fast-selling series fiction for young readers. Looking closely at the spines, you can see how publishers used bold stamped titles and colored cloth to make each volume stand out on a shelf.
