The title places this lithograph inside the Capitol, which sets it apart from the many prints of Adams's career. Adams, the former president who had returned to Congress as a representative from Massachusetts, collapsed on the House floor on February 21, 1848, and died two days later in the Speaker's Room. Nathaniel Currier issued this hand-colored lithograph in New York that same year, when the public was eager for news of the event. Its title ties the death to the building itself, a reminder that the Capitol became a place of national mourning as well as lawmaking.
