What sets this picture apart is its pairing of Illinois delegates with Theodore Roosevelt, dated June 1, 1912, weeks before the Republican National Convention in Chicago. That spring Roosevelt was challenging the incumbent, William Howard Taft, for the party's nomination, and contested state delegations were central to the fight. The George Grantham Bain Collection came from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that sold pictures to newspapers, so the image reflects the press interest in that struggle.
