This color lithograph takes its brand name, Juliet, from the heroine of Shakespeare's *Romeo and Juliet*, and it advertised fine cut chewing tobacco. James Moran & Co. of St. Louis issued it around 1873, and the New York firm Averell & Peckett printed it. In the 1870s, tobacco makers often gave their brands romantic or literary names and printed them in bright color on labels pasted to packages, which gave buyers a reason to remember one brand over another. The copyright notice shows that the company claimed the design as its own, a common step for makers competing for attention on crowded shop shelves.
