Few objects capture the Pacific Northwest's orchard economy as directly as a crate label, and this one carries the name of the Wapato Fruit & Cold Storage Co. across its face, tying the image to a packing operation in the Yakima Valley of central Washington. Labels like this were pasted onto wooden shipping boxes so that buyers in distant cities could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance, and the bright chromolithographed artwork was meant to make a crate stand out on a grocer's shelf or a railcar platform. Yakima Valley became one of the region's major apple districts after irrigation reached its dry benchland in the early twentieth century, so the label is a useful record of how fruit was marketed as the industry grew. Notice how the design blends the fruit itself with the valley's promotional language, a common approach of the period.
