Dated August 29, 1914, this glass negative shows a peace parade held about a month after war broke out in Europe. The record does not name the city or the marchers, and the title and date come from caption cards that have not been independently verified. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that sold pictures to newspapers across the country, documented many such events, which reflect the hopes of Americans in the early months of the war that the United States could stay out of the fighting. Demonstrations like this continued through 1915 as debate over neutrality grew.
