The title, Police parade, comes from caption cards the Bain News Service wrote at the time, and the Library of Congress lists it as unverified, so the exact occasion and place remain uncertain. The picture dates to 1918, when the United States was fully engaged in the First World War and American cities often staged public marches and patriotic displays. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, sold images to newspapers and magazines, and its glass negatives later passed to the Library of Congress, where they preserve a detailed record of urban life in the early twentieth century.
