Harry Furniss's 1918 color lithograph poster, *Better than the V.C.*, weighs Britain's highest award for gallantry against something its title calls more valuable. Furniss was a well-known British caricaturist and illustrator whose work appeared in *Punch*, and the poster's subjects point to a wartime focus on families and homecomings. By 1918, many households in England were living with the war's losses and separations, and posters like this one encouraged viewers to honor ordinary reunion as much as public valor. It offers a useful view of how the war was discussed on the home front.
