Few details survive for this glass negative beyond its title, Napoleon, which the Bain News Service recorded from caption cards and which the Library of Congress marks as unverified. The name may point to the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, though it could equally belong to a person photographed by the New York agency, which supplied news pictures to newspapers from the early 1900s. Bain's plates were typically 5 by 7 inches or smaller and made for quick reproduction, so the identification is best treated as a starting point rather than settled fact.
