Roadside plant growth is the subject here, the ongoing work of keeping brush, saplings, and invasive species from closing in on the Blue Ridge Parkway's sweeping views. The parkway was begun in 1935 as a scenic route linking Shenandoah National Park in Virginia with Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina, and it was built largely with New Deal labor. Crews have had to maintain its edges continuously, clearing overgrowth, mowing shoulders, and managing vegetation so that travelers keep the long mountain vistas the road was designed to frame.
