A painted postcard titled "Liebesrausch," German for something like "rapture of love," shows a couple locked in a kiss, and the title alone tells you the sentiment the artist was after. Cards of this kind were produced in large numbers in Germany and elsewhere in Europe around the turn of the twentieth century, when sending a picture postcard was a cheap and fashionable way to share affection. Illustrated cards like this one were often sold for holidays such as Valentine's Day, and their soft colors and idealized figures reflect the sentimental taste of the period.
