A seated woman in a ruffled dress, captured on a daguerreotype dated 1850, shows how portraiture had changed within barely a decade of the process being made public in 1839. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, so each image is a single positive that reflects light and shifts with the viewer's angle, which is why the surface can look mirror-like. Exposures often ran for several seconds or longer, so sitters were held still with head braces and steady posture. The ruffles and seated pose point to the fashions and studio conventions of the early 1850s, when such portraits were prized as keepsakes for families of modest and middling means.
