Among the Texas courthouse designs on this board, this lithograph is the accepted plan for Victoria County, the only one here tied to that particular seat of government. James Reilly Gordon, an architect, prepared the design, and the lithograph appeared in the *American Architect and Building News* in 1894. The journal was a leading trade publication of the period, and its plates let architects, county officials and builders compare designs across the country. In the 1880s and 1890s many Texas counties replaced older courthouses with larger masonry buildings, so this print documents a common civic building project of its time.
