Cupid rides in a basket-slung airship built from a flower, a whimsical fantasy image that sets this card apart from the usual hearts and arrows of its day. Valentine postcards like this one were mass-produced in the early twentieth century, when the picture postcard was the cheapest way to send a sentiment and when new technologies such as airships and automobiles captured the public imagination. Designers often mixed romance with the wonder of flight, so a winged boy floating over blossoms reflected both the sweetness of courtship and the excitement of modern invention. Such cards were usually sent with a short handwritten message, and many survive today as small snapshots of popular taste.
