Soldiers of the 2d Battalion, 12th Infantry, are the subject here, shown performing a musical drill, a formation exercise in which troops moved in step to a band's rhythm. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied newspapers in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, and its collection documents American life of that era. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unknown, but the view of disciplined regimental movement reflects the emphasis on drill and training common in the U.S. Army of that period.
