Few of the Bain News Service glass negatives show a place as plainly as this one: a view of Panama City set against its harbor, recorded by a photographer working for a press agency that sold pictures to newspapers across the country in the early twentieth century. The Bain collection holds tens of thousands of such images, and its caption information was often added after the fact, so the exact date and vantage point of this view are not recorded here. Panama was a focus of American attention during the years the canal was built, when the city's waterfront and shipping traffic drew steady interest in print.
