Drew County's courthouse stood in Monticello, a town in the southeast corner of Arkansas that served as the county seat. The Library of Congress dates this photographic print to about 1879, a bracketed estimate that suggests the date was inferred rather than recorded at the time. In the decades after the Civil War, county courthouses like this one were the most visible symbols of local government, where deeds, court sessions, and elections took place. The record's subject tags also list the building under "Courthouses" and the town by name, which makes it a useful reference point for studying small-town public architecture in Reconstruction-era Arkansas.
