The courthouse in Arkadelphia, seat of Clark County in southwestern Arkansas, served the county from 1844 until 1899, according to the caption. Arkansas had become a state in 1836, and county seats of that era were the center of local government, where court sessions, land records and elections took place. The caption card gives no date for the photograph itself, so the image is best read as a view of the building during its working years rather than a dated record. Courthouses like this one often anchored the town square, so the building's placement can say as much about the community as its architecture.
