Horsemen gathered around their flags anchor this chromolithograph, a color printing method that built up an image from a separate stone for each hue and was widely used in the later nineteenth century. Prints of mounted officers were sold to families who wanted patriotic scenes of the war and its commanders on their walls. The record does not name the officers shown, so the link to Ulysses S. Grant comes from how this print is grouped here. Grant's rise through the Union army made images of mounted leaders with their colors especially popular in the 1860s and 1870s.
