Drawn on the day the Battle of Fredericksburg opened, this sheet shows Union engineers laying pontoon bridges across the Rappahannock River at Fredericksburg, Virginia, on December 11, 1862. The work fell to the New York Engineers, 50th Regiment, whose men had to float their spans into place under fire from Confederate sharpshooters posted in the town's houses and along the riverbank. The pencil and white-highlighted sketch, made on pinkish-tan paper, also records the boats and soldiers at work, offering a close view of the labor that preceded the battle's bloody assault on Confederate lines on the heights behind the town.
