Antoinette B. Hervey's pinhole photograph turns its attention to the arches of New York's Municipal Building, a civic landmark in lower Manhattan completed in 1914 and known for its great arcade spanning Chambers Street. Hervey was affiliated with the Clarence H. White School of Photography, whose students favored soft-focus, painterly effects in the Pictorialist tradition. Made with a pinhole camera and printed in palladium, the image shows how the picture's simple, rounded forms can give the architecture a quiet, almost abstract quality. The print was exhibited at The Camera Club in New York in 1931 and later published in a 1996 study of the White School.
