New Brunswick, the county seat of Middlesex County, New Jersey, sat on the Raritan River in 1880 and drew much of its living from the waterway and the rail lines that met there. The Delaware and Raritan Canal, finished in the 1830s, carried coal and freight past the city's wharves, while the Pennsylvania Railroad's main line between New York and Philadelphia made it a regular stop for travelers and goods. Rutgers College, chartered as Queen's College in 1766 and renamed for its benefactor in 1825, anchored the city's educational life and gave its streets a steady population of students and professors. Residents of the period would have known New Brunswick first as a canal and railroad town with a college on its hill, a place where river commerce, factory work, and academic life sat side by side.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of New Brunswick, New Jersey, drawn in 1880. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
