Newark in 1916 felt the war in Europe through its factories, as orders for military boots, harness leather, and cloth from Allied buyers kept tanneries and garment shops along the Passaic and the Morris Canal busy. The city was still the largest in New Jersey, with leather, jewelry, hats, and brewing as its main trades. Prudential's home office continued to expand downtown, while the Essex County courthouse and city hall anchored a civic center where lawyers, clerks, and aldermen argued over paving, water, and the budget. Many working families were immigrants or children of immigrants from Italy, Germany, Ireland, and Eastern Europe, and their parish churches and mutual aid societies held together the crowded blocks. The panorama shows that busy city just before the United States entered the war in 1917.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Newark, New Jersey, drawn in 1916. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
