Most portraits of Lincoln from this period trace back to a handful of photographs, and this lithograph is a printed version of that same familiar face, produced in Philadelphia by the firm of Herline & Hensel and issued in New York by publisher Joseph Hoover. Lithographs like this were a cheap, fast way to put a president's likeness into parlors and offices during the Civil War years, when public appetite for images of the leader was high. Its exact date is uncertain, given only as the 1860s, but prints of this kind were widely sold and circulated across the North. Notice how the stone-printed tones give the face a softer, more painterly finish than a photograph.
