The Hotel Astor stood on Broadway between 44th and 45th Streets in Midtown Manhattan, at the heart of the theater district that later became Times Square. The hotel opened in 1904 and became a favorite meeting place for theatergoers, politicians and society figures, with its restaurants and ballroom drawing crowds through the early twentieth century. This negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose news photographs were made by the Bain News Service. The title is taken from caption information the service recorded, which has not been independently verified, and the picture's exact date is not given in the record.
