Twenty actor portraits, mounted together on a scroll, make up this set, and its record names Nakamura Shikan (1831–1899), a kabuki performer, as the subject. Three designers worked on the sheets: Utagawa Toyokuni, also known as Kunisada, Toyohara Kunichika, and Utagawa Kuniaki. Made between 1860 and 1866, late in the Edo period, the prints show the bold color and fine detail of nishiki-e, or brocade printing, a style that flourished as kabuki drew large audiences and actor prints sold widely.
