Twenty sheets mounted together as a single scroll make this set unusual, since it gathers actor portraits from several hands rather than one series. The subject is the kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan (1831 to 1899), who appears here in a range of stage roles. Most of the designs are by Utagawa Toyokuni (Kunisada) and Toyohara Kunichika, with a few by Utagawa Kuniaki, reflecting how actor prints were commissioned and produced in Edo during the 1860s. Printed in full color using the nishiki-e technique, the set shows how theater fashion and printmaking closely overlapped in that decade.
