Helena, Montana, in 1890 was barely a year into statehood, and its people were still adjusting to being the capital of a state instead of a territory. Montana had entered the Union in November 1889, and the rivalry with Butte, the copper town to the southwest, kept political feeling sharp. Silver was the subject of much talk that year, since the federal silver purchase law passed in July 1890 gave the mines and the banks along Last Chance Gulch reason to watch prices closely. Residents would have known their city as the commercial center of a mining region, a place where fortunes made in the surrounding mountains were spent on brick blocks and new houses.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Helena, Montana, drawn in 1890. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
