Miles City was a young town in 1883, having grown up beside Fort Keogh where the Tongue River meets the Yellowstone in eastern Montana Territory. The Northern Pacific Railway reached it in 1881, and that connection made the town a shipping point for beef cattle driven in from the open range. Cattle buyers, freighters, soldiers from the fort, and ranch hands filled its stores and saloons, and its streets and stock pens were built around that trade. Residents would have known Miles City as one of the busiest cattle towns on the Yellowstone, where the boom seemed certain to last. The hard winter of 1886 and 1887 would soon ruin many of the outfits that had come in on the rails.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Miles City, Montana, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
