Helena, Montana, in 1875 was a gold camp that had grown into a territorial seat. Prospectors had found placer gold along Last Chance Gulch in 1864, and the miners' settlement that followed took its name from the Greek word for the sun, after the town's original gulch became the main street. By 1875 the town was shifting from scattered placer digging toward a more settled commercial life of stores, banks, and mining supply houses, and the legislature had recently chosen it as the capital of Montana Territory, a decision that brought officials, lawyers, and newspapers. Residents would have known the place as a rough, ambitious town built on the wealth of the surrounding mountains, still waiting for the railroad that would later link it to the wider country.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Helena, Montana, drawn in 1875. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
