The title, "Love's Reward," frames this scene of a couple kissing as a sentimental payoff, the kind of romantic message that illustrated cards and small prints carried to a wide audience in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was issued under the name Celebrity Art Co. of Boston, one of many commercial publishers that turned affectionate genre scenes into inexpensive images for homes, greeting cards, and holiday keepsakes. Valentine's Day became a major occasion for such pictures, and collectors today often look at them for their stylized faces, soft colors, and the way they reflected the courtship manners of their time.
