I Love My Wife, But OH! You Kid" takes its name from a playful phrase that was popular in the early 1900s, when a catchphrase like this could sell sheet music, postcards, and novelty prints. The line itself is a joke about a man who is devoted to his wife yet still admires a flirtatious younger woman, a teasing theme that fit well with the comic side of Valentine's Day at the time. Valentine cards of that era often mixed sentiment with mischief, and jokes about divided affections were a reliable source of laughs. Looking closely at the figures and their expressions will show how the artist turned a simple double take into the joke.
