The caption names a Philadelphia National League player surnamed Alexander, most likely Grover Cleveland Alexander, the right-handed pitcher who joined the Phillies in 1911 and was among the league's leading pitchers by 1914. The negative comes from the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency whose pictures of sports and news reached newspapers across the country in the early twentieth century. Because Bain's titles were taken from unverified caption data, the identification is best read as probable rather than confirmed. The nitrate film itself is also worth noting, since the material is highly flammable and unstable, which is why many such negatives were later copied onto safer stock.
