Angels bearing lilies were a favorite motif on Victorian Christmas cards, and this one shows the pairing that made the lily such a recognizable emblem of the season. The lily carried associations with the Annunciation and with purity, so a winged messenger holding one fit the sentiment of the holiday well. Cards like this were typically printed in chromolithography, with several colored stones layered to build soft, glowing tones. Their makers sold them by the thousands in the 1870s and 1880s, when exchanging cards had become a fashionable custom in Britain and America.
