Fairies and a red amaryllis are the details that set this card apart from the angel-and-nativity scenes that dominate its board. Victorian Christmas cards of this kind were a relatively new commercial product in the 1870s and 1880s, when printers such as Marcus Ward and Raphael Tuck began mass-producing chromolithographed greetings for a middle class that was sending cards in growing numbers. Fairies, popular in illustration at the time, were often used to suggest a gentle, whimsical sentiment for the season rather than a religious one. The amaryllis, a winter-blooming flower associated with the holiday, reflects the period's taste for floral motifs printed in bright, layered color.
