Golly, the figure beside the bear on this card, was a Robertson's mascot for much of the twentieth century. The character came from Florence Kate Upton's Golliwogg books, published in the late nineteenth century, and the Scottish preserve maker adopted him for its jars in 1910. The card's play on words, "What a Jam!", was a typical catchphrase of the period's food advertising. Today the figure is widely recognized as a racist caricature, so the card is most useful as a record of how commercial imagery of that era portrayed Black people.
