Washington at Monmouth shows the commander during the battle fought near Freehold, New Jersey, on June 28, 1778, where he rallied Continental troops who were falling back after Charles Lee's retreat. Felix Darley supplied the design and G. R. Hall engraved the plate, which G. P. Putnam published in New York in 1858, some eighty years after the fighting. The library classes it as a conjectural work, so it is an imagined moment rather than an eyewitness record, and its dramatic staging reflects how mid-nineteenth-century Americans liked to picture Washington.
